Born in Grand Junction, Colorado and raised in Farmington since he was ten years old, John graduated from Farmington High in 1984.  He went off to Texas A&M for college where he earned a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Out of college he spent six years at Union Carbide Corporation, starting as a Project Engineer, and ultimately serving as Operations Manager, responsible for overseeing pipeline operations for his division from Houston to New Orleans.  While in Houston he met and married his wife and best friend, Stephanie.

In 1994 he took the opportunity to move back home and joined D.J. Simmons, Inc., a Farmington based oil and gas exploration and production company.  John became President and CEO in 2003. Simmons has operations across the Four-Corners region in New Mexico, Colorado and Utah. A second division of the company, Twin Stars, Ltd., leases and maintains wellhead equipment for numerous oil and gas companies throughout this same area as well as the Permian Basin of SE New Mexico. Both companies are known for their quality work and strong ethical standards in dealing with business and the public.

Active in the industry, he is a board member and past President of the Independent Petroleum Association of New Mexico, the current Treasurer of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association, and serves on the Board of Advisers for the Denver based Western Energy Alliance.

Inspired by his community serving parents, Gus and Barbara Byrom, John has also taken an active role in helping to make the Farmington area a better place to live. He has served on two fine arts boards bringing high quality entertainment to the area, is a former Planning and Zoning Commissioner and presently sits on the Farmington Chamber of Commerce board. In recent years, he has directed his passions toward reversing the sagging economic condition in San Juan County. John was a founding member of the E>P economic development think tank, which was the impetus for the formation of this high caliber Four Corners Economic Development organization. John is very proud to be a part of this effort.

He and Stephanie have three children, Luke, Lydia and Logan, ages eighteen, sixteen and thirteen.  His favorite pastimes are relaxing at the family cabin, skiing, traveling with his family and automobile racing.
